VRV or VRF?
VRV or Variable Refrigerant Volume is an original official trademark of Daikin, which invented the system in 1982. VRV is also known as VRF or Variable Refrigerant Flow by the rest of the industry, although they are essentially the same technology.
VRV or VRF is a multi-split type air conditioning system most suitable in business or commercial buildings that utilizes variable refrigerant flow control to provide customers with the ability to maintain individual zone control in each room and floor of a building. This technology is still considered to be today’s gold standard of central air conditioning systems.
VRV uses the latest technology in air conditioning to serve up to 62 indoor fan coils from one modular system (expandable to 36 tons with VRV IV), with ventilation and BMS or Building Management Systems options never before seen in DX (either packaged or split systems) systems.
Packaged vs. Split Systems
A packaged air conditioning system has the evaporator coil, condenser and compressor all in one case, which is sometimes placed on concrete near the foundation of a building, and sometimes on the building’s roof. It is often used in small commercial buildings. Air supply and return ducts come from indoors through the home’s exterior wall or roof to connect with the packaged air conditioner, which is usually located outdoors. Packaged air conditioners are generally a combination of both cooling and heating systems, employing electric heating coils or sometimes a natural gas furnace. This combination effectively eliminates the need of a separate indoor furnace.
Daikin M-Series units are packaged, containing everything in one unit and can be installed as ground-level or rooftop installations and horizontal or down-flow applications.
It is generally easier, however, to achieve high efficiency with a split system than with a packaged system.
In split-systems, high-efficiency compressors act in unison with a high-efficiency coil design. The result being the best levels of reliability, durability and efficiency in a commercial air conditioner.
Daikin heat pumps employ chlorine-free R-410A refrigerant and feature UV-resistant powder-paint finish that resists the effects of weather and time in order to offer energy-efficient heating and cooling performance.
The indoor portion of the split-system, the air-handler, circulates the cooled air in the summer and heated air in the winter quickly, quietly and economically, making your air condition faster with little noise and more savings on your utility bills.
For lighter commercial needs, like a restaurant, shop or small office, a Daikin SkyAir single-zone system is often a good fit. For small businesses with lots of work space, Daikin’s Multi-Zone System provides perfect comfort for up to eight rooms.
For bigger businesses – like apartment complexes, large offices, retail stores, schools and warehouses, etc – the VRV Heat Pump and VRV Heat Recovery systems can cover up to 20 tons of capacity and condition the air of over 41 indoor spaces to as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit.
For even larger businesses VRV IV Heat Pumps and VRV Heat Recovery IV systems can be utilized for up to 36 tons of capacity or 64 indoor spaces.
Water-cooled systems are also available and can save energy in certain environments.
Heat Pump Systems vs. Heat Recovery Systems
A heat pump is both a cooling and heating system that operates throughout all seasons of the year to keep you comfortable. During warm months, working like a standard air conditioner, it takes heat from inside one’s home and sends it into the outdoor air. During winter season, however, the heat pump collects heat from outside and transfers it inside your home.
A heat recovery system is more of a direct ventilation system, bringing fresher air into your dwelling as if you have your windows open. While one fan pushes musty air out of the building, the other fan pulls fresh air in. The cost of running such a system can be higher, however, because the temperature of the outside air has to be regulated, and even more so during debilitating cold spells. This cost can be somewhat mitigated by a special ventilator, featuring a heat exchange core, which catches the heat of the outgoing air and transfers it to the incoming air, without compromising its freshness.
